U.S. Rep. Kelly Morrison Introduces Humanitarian Standards for Individuals in ICE and CBP Custody Act

Bill would ensure health screenings and emergency medical care for individuals in ICE custody

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Rep. Kelly Morrison joined fellow Democratic doctor Rep. Raul Ruiz (CA-25) in introducing the Humanitarian Standards for Individuals in ICE and CBP Custody Act, which would ensure that individuals held in ICE and CBP custody are guaranteed humanitarian health and safety standards — including medical screening, access to medication, and humane living conditions. These standards are not guaranteed by law or provided at ICE and CBP detention centers.

An OB-GYN who has practiced medicine for more than 20 years, Representative Morrison is deeply concerned by reports of cruel, unsafe, and unlawful conditions inside of the Whipple Federal Building in Minneapolis, where Minnesotans detained by ICE are being held. The Humanitarian Standards for Individuals in ICE and CBP Custody Act would restore dignity, safety, and human rights to those held in federal custody.
