U.S. Rep. Kelly Morrison Working to Stop Elon Musk From Invading Minnesotans’ Privacy
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Kelly Morrison (MN-03) is joining her colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives in introducing the Taxpayer Data Protection Act. This legislation is a direct response to Elon Musk’s illegal invasion of Americans’ privacy. It will stop people with conflicts of interest or without a security clearance from being able to access Americans’ most sensitive personal information, like Social Security numbers, tax information, and banking accounts for direct deposit.
“I have heard from thousands of Minnesotans this week who are outraged that the Trump-Vance Administration has allowed Elon Musk to access their most personal data and financial information. I want every Minnesotan to know: we are fighting to protect your personal data and privacy. This illegal breach of personal data is unprecedented and unacceptable. I implore my colleagues in the House: we must stand together to pass this critical bill on behalf of all Minnesotans,” said Congresswoman Morrison.
The Trump-Vance Administration granted Elon Musk access to the Treasury Department’s payment system, which is responsible for disbursing Social Security and Medicare benefits. This means that Elon Musk, an unelected billionaire, was granted unfettered access to Americans’ core financial information. If passed, the Taxpayer Data Protection Act will curb corruption and protect privacy by ensuring that only trusted public servants without conflicts of interest and with appropriate security clearances can access the Treasury Department’s most sensitive payment systems.
Congress needs only three Republicans to sign on to this bill to pass the U.S. House of Representatives and protect the private data of all Americans.
