U.S. Rep Morrison Co-Sponsors Legislation to Permanently Protect the Boundary Waters
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Kelly Morrison (MN-03) co-sponsored the Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection and Pollution Prevention Act, which would permanently protect 225,504 acres of federal lands and waters within the Superior National Forest from highly hazardous sulfide-ore copper mining, which has never been done in Minnesota before and is considered the most toxic industry in America. This legislation, led by Rep. Betty McCollum (MN-04), would also protect this area from a dangerous plan by a Chilean mining company to extract critical minerals from the Superior National Forest and sell them to China for smelting.
“I’m proud to co-sponsor the Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection and Pollution Prevention Act, which would protect Minnesota from toxic sulfide-ore copper mining – a dangerous and costly threat that Minnesotans should not have to face. The Boundary Waters are a pristine natural wonder and the pride of Minnesota, and they deserve to be protected for generations to come. We simply cannot allow a foreign mining company with no stake in our state to extract our resources, pollute our water, ruin our wilderness, and leave the Minnesota taxpayer on the hook to pay for the cleanup,” said Congresswoman Morrison.
