U.S. Rep. Kelly Morrison Calls Out Republican Attacks on Children’s Healthcare
Republicans proposing at least $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid, which more than 650,000 children in Minnesota rely on
MAPLE GROVE, MINNESOTA - Today, U.S. Representative Kelly Morrison (MN-03) visited Gillette Children’s in Maple Grove, Minnesota to highlight the critical importance of Medicaid and the dangerous threat that Republicans are posing to Minnesota families by proposing cuts to this health insurance program.
Congressional Republicans are proposing to cut funding for Medicaid by at least $880 billion dollars – threatening a critical health insurance program that millions of Americans rely on. Republicans’ proposed cuts could lead to massive changes to the Medicaid program, including cuts to health insurance coverage, cuts to hospital payments, and cuts to benefits like home- and community-based services.
“We must be clear: Republicans' proposals to cut Medicaid threaten the health and wellbeing of our children. Hundreds of thousands of Minnesota families rely on Medicaid for their health insurance. As a physician who has cared for patients in Minnesota for more than 20 years, I know that health insurance is not a throwaway line item in a budget – it’s the difference between receiving lifesaving care or not. We should be doing everything we can to lower costs and expand access to health care – not gut it.
“I am so grateful to the health care providers I met with at Gillette Children’s today and the families who are sharing their stories. I will fight to protect Medicaid, and I will always fight for Minnesotans to be able to access the health care they need,” said Congresswoman Morrison.
In Minnesota alone, more than 650,000 children rely on Medicaid. Medicaid provides health insurance for more than a million Minnesotans, including families and children with low-incomes, older adults, and people with disabilities.
A significant majority of the approximately 30,000 patients Gillette Children’s serves are eligible for Medicaid because of their disability or income level. Medicaid coverage is essential for this population to get the care they need.
